On Sunday it was reported that thousands of people, continuing several months’ demonstrations, took to the streets of Chile to protest against the so-called “Monsanto Law”, which will enable massive corporations to patent seeds and control the selling price and who uses them.
Demonstrators believe it will damage Chile’s biodiversity and endanger the health of consumers throughout the country.
The legislation, which was proposed by ex-President Michelle Bachelet, is currently being discussed by the Chilean Senate and has already been approved by the House of Representatives. The law’s official name is the Plant Breeders Act, and it is feared that the patent granted would mean large corporations would set the price of seeds and who can use them.
